Lee Hanenburg, 82, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Edgebrook Care Center, Edgerton, Minnesota.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, January 31; 11:00 a.m., at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Edgerton, with Pastor Marlin Van Schepen officiating. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, Edgerton.

Congregational songs were The Old Rugged Cross, My Jesus, I Love Thee, and When Peace Like A River with Linda Vanderaa as accompanist. Special music was The Lord’s Prayer, sung by Dallas Roskamp.

Pallbearers were Andrew Hanenburg, Danny Hanenburg, Benjamin Hanenburg, Abby Galvin, Alexis Andrew, Seth Hanenburg, Danielle Hanenburg, and Mackenzie Hanenburg.

Honorary pallbearers were John Robert Talsma, Bill Vanderby, Daryl Hanenburg, Glenn Hanenburg, and Lloyd Veld.

Leon Clare Hanenburg was born on June 29, 1941, to Charles and Caroline (Roskamp) in Pipestone. He grew up on the family farm near Edgerton and attended Edgerton Christian schools. He attended Dordt College for one year. He also worked at M&H and Brink Implement.

Lee met Joyce Seerveld when she moved to Edgerton to teach. They were married on June 15, 1964, and were blessed with three boys; Greg in 1965, Troy in 1967, and Travis in 1972. The family made many trips to Long Island, N.Y., to visit family. Lee and Joyce were involved in the community and enjoyed spending time with friends. They were married for almost 32 years until her death in 1996.

Lee started farming in 1971. He was involved with farming till 2019. During this time, he also enjoyed driving semitruck for John Ruiter.

Soon after the death of his wife Joyce in 1996, Lee was introduced to Harriet Pollema through mutual motorcycling friends. They were married on June 14, 1997. Lee and Harriet loved to travel. They wintered in Florida and Arizona with their camper for several years and enjoyed many miles on their different motorcycles. Lee really enjoyed riding his Harley Ultra Classics all over the United States. They had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, and much of the United States on motorcycles, camper, and cruises. They celebrated 25 years of marriage last year.

Lee also enjoyed old cars, tractors (John Deere only) and his 1950 Mercury Coupe. He could always be seen with his leather vest (with pink peppermints in the inside pocket) and his Harley hat, along with his signature handlebar mustache.

In his more recent years, Lee especially enjoyed his grandkids and loved to have coffee at Cenex with his buddies. He never knew a stranger and loved visiting with friends.

After breaking his hip in December of 2022, Lee entered Edgebrook. He passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on January 23, 2024, at the age of 82 years, 6 months.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Joyce, his son Troy, and his sister Sue.

Lee is survived by his wife Harriet of Edgerton; his sons Greg (Joyce) of Edgerton and Travis (Amy) of Canton, Ga.; and his brothers Daryl (Donna) of Edgerton and Glenn (Jean) of Coopersville, Mich. He also has seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Lee is also survived by Harriet’s four children and their spouses and her 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grands.
