Buried Again: Two Way Storm Drops 15+ inches

With weather forecasters already proclaiming Snowmegedon was on the way a week before the storm came through, many were hopeful that they would have over-estimated the projected snowfall totals. While they were saying we could have 20-plus inches, it was a “mere” 15 inches that fell on Tuesday, Feb. 21, through Thursday, Feb. 23. This was the second time this winter where our area received snow-inches in the teens, with a similar system having moved through the area in December, dropping about 16 inches of snow.

The storm started out with some snow on Tuesday morning, but the real storm began that night. The City of Edgerton declared a snow emergency that evening, asking folks to take their cars off the street for the next two days as they would continue to plow through the storm. Wednesday morning, there was already a 5-foot windrow of snow down Main. Hulsteins got that picked up in time for the next round of the storm on Wednesday afternoon. By Thursday morning, people were working hard on getting the snow off driveways and sidewalks. But with five-foot drifts over some sidewalks, especially on Mechanic Street, that was proving to be a job for heavier equipment than a shovel. The city is in the process of updating their snow policies and plans to pass a new snow ordinance at their March 8 meeting. A copy of the snow policy can be viewed at city hall. The new policy will make it possible for the Pipestone County sheriff’s office to ticket and tow vehicles parked on the street during an officially declared snow emergency.
