Kindergarten News

This year there are 29 kindergartners ready to learn how to learn. Their teachers are Miss Mulder and Mrs. Raak.

The year started with a trip to the zoo. It was a great day to enjoy God’s creation. His creativity displayed in all the different animals and birds we saw, and it allowed students, teachers, and parents to get acquainted.

The Kinders have continued to get to know each other and their teachers as they dive into the alphabet, read numbers in math, learn about apples in science, and discover God’s creation in the Bible.

First Grade News

In first grade we have been learning many things!

In Miss Buys’ class we have been going through “Little Pilgrims Big Journey” for devotions every morning. This is a children’s story based on John Bunyan’s book “The Pilgrim’s Progress.” The kids absolutely love this book and it helps them better understand the Christian walk at an early age. Many great conversations spark from the things Christian (the main character) goes through on his journey including battling temptations and trials, and understanding God’s character. We have loved learning more about what it looks like to stay on the “narrow path” and walk worthy of our calling.

In the Bible, we have been learning about Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and how God uses sinful people to carry out his purposes. We have seen how God keeps his promises to them and will keep his promises to us. We most clearly see His promise fulfilled in Jesus because all nations on earth have been blessed due to His death and resurrection.

Science has been an exciting time!  We planted seeds and watched as the seed began to grow.  We were able to see it sprout, roots begin to grow and now a small plant.  The class learned the different parts of a plant and what the four main things a plant needs in order to survive.  We called them the “core four.”  They are air, sunlight, soil, and water.  We also learned how we can eat different parts of plants.  We learned how God does provide for us in all our needs just by the basic foods we can eat.

In math we have been learning how to count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.  We have been learning about word problems and how to add.  We learned the important math word, “altogether”  and how this is a clue to know to add the numbers together.

Reading has been a blast.  We have been learning about schools in different places of the world, what it is like where we live, how pets can be special, and what friends do together.   In all these themes we worked on key details, sequencing in the story and how to write good sentences.  We have also reviewed the short vowels and are getting really good at listening for them in words.

Second Grade News

The second graders are off to a great start this year.  We are reading many stories about how friends and families work together.   We learned how important it is to help each other out when we see a need, after all “two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor!” (Ecclesiastes 4:9).  We also understand the importance of taking care of our earth and the world we live in.

We learned about plant and animal needs in Science.  We talked about reptiles, amphibians and fish, mammals and birds.   We especially enjoyed looking at the feathers of birds in a microscope.  It was interesting to see the variety of colors, size, and texture in the assortment of feathers that the students brought in.

In Art, we designed leaves using various types of lines.  We also painted a fall tree using our fingerprints for leaves.  We are collecting leaves of various sizes, colors and shapes.  What a beautiful world God created for us to live in, and we marvel at the creation and changing seasons.
