Bosma is New Resource Teacher at SWC

By Jill Fennema –

Nikki Bosma is the new Resource Room teacher at Southwest Christian Elementary School. She is filling the shoes vacated by Wanda Schaap, who retired last spring. As the resource room teacher, Nikki will be assisting students in kindergarten through 8th grade.

Nikki grew up in the Edgerton/Leota community. Her parents are Brent and Wanetta Feikema of rural Lismore.  Nikki went to Leota Christian and later graduated from Southwest Christian High School.

Nikki graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, in 2004. She taught in a 5th/6th grade combined classroom at Worthington Christian for four years before taking some time off to raise her family. She went back to Worthington Christian when her children were older. She was the part time  Title 1 teacher for four years. Last year she taught 5th-8th grade math at Worthington Christian.

She and her husband, David, have three children. Their two oldest, Deyten (13) and Lily (11) are students at Worthington Christian, while their youngest, Aubrey (9) is a student at SWC. David is  a truck driver. He is an owner/operator for T&C Trucking in Wilmont.

Nikki said that she has always enjoyed being around children and has had many great teachers that she learned from over the years.

“I wouldn’t say there’s that one moment that I decided that I wanted to teach, but I’ve always loved working with kids,” she said. “I had thought about other professions, but felt God leading me back to teaching and the education field.”

What is her favorite part of being a teacher?

“I enjoy looking at things from a different perspective,” she said. “So many times there are different ways to teach something that might not work for one, but might help someone else. Looking at things in a different way can give a student that ‘aha’ moment.”

She added that she enjoys helping students discover their different gifts and talents and really encouraging them to grow those gifts throughout their school year.

Nikki added that she is excited to start on this new adventure in Edgerton. When she is not busy working, she enjoys spending time with family, reading, watching football, and going on walks.
