FRANCES ROSELLE (KREUN) VEENHOF

Frances Roselle (Kreun) Veenhof died Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the age of 100, in Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services were March 15 at First Reformed Church, Sioux Falls.  Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Edgerton.

Frances was born August 27, 1923, in Leota, Minn., to Sam and Jennie (Westenberg) Kreun and grew up and attended school there with four brothers and five sisters.

She married Henry Veenhof Jr. on November 17, 1944, and after Henry returned from serving with the Army in Europe they worked the family farm near Edgerton, Minn., for a decade. Their three boys, Kenneth, Orvin, and Douglas were born on the farm and the family moved to Edgerton for a time where they bought the local butcher shop before moving to Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1958. Their daughter Terry was born in Sioux Falls and Frances worked as a full-time homemaker to help the children to adjust to life in the city and learn to navigate large schools. She was a skilled seamstress and made many of the kid’s clothes and took in mending to supplement the family income.

Frances and Henry were active members of the First Reformed Church and raised the children to attend two services on Sunday,  Sunday School, and Wednesday youth programs. Frances made friends easily and enjoyed time with her family and church society as well as Sunday visits to the large extended family still living in the Edgerton area. She loved to travel and after retirement she and Henry took a number of bus trips around the country to see new sites and make new friends who she stayed in touch with for years. Frances worked into her late 80s as a food demonstrator at a HyVee supermarket in Sioux Falls, and she was a well-loved grandmotherly figure to the regular customers she got to know. Frances spent the last 13 years of her life at Luther Manor nursing home in Sioux Falls and until her last days entertained the staff and other residents with her humor and bright spirit.

Her resilience was an inspiration that survives in her sons Kenneth (Linda) Sioux Falls, and Douglas, Crestone, Colo., daughter Terry, Sioux Falls, and grandson, Steve Veenhof, Sioux Falls. She will by greatly missed.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, and son Orvin; her brothers Lawrence, Harley, Wilmar, and Marvin; and by her sisters Helen DeYoung, Edna Schuld, Mae Scholten, Dorothy Beukelman, and Ruth Davis.
