VELMA KORTHALS

March 8, 1942 – April 10, 2022
Velma Korthals, 80, of Parker and Marion, S.D., died Sunday, April 10, 2022, under hospice care.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 14, 2022, at First Church of Monroe with Pastor Dan Witkop officiating. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery, Marion.
Velma Jean (Hamm) Korthals was born on March 8, 1942, to Dick and Carrie (Vos) Hamm in Pipestone, Minn. She attended Leota Christian School until the 8th grade, going on to graduate from Southwest Christian High School in Edgerton, Minn. Velma thought she was an only child until 1956 when her younger brother Dave was born.
On May 1, 1964, Velma was united in marriage to Richard Korthals at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota, Minn. They lived in Luverne, Minn., until 1973 where all the children were born and then moved to Marion where they raised their four children.
Velma was involved in healthcare at the Tieszen Nursing Home for years and at the Oakview Terrace Nursing Home in Freeman, S.D., where she enjoyed helping others until she retired in June of 2015.
She was an active member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Marion until it closed.
Velma’s hobbies were spending time with a group of ladies from the Marion area for coffee and breakfast, collecting Blue Delft, and also enjoyed camping. She always looked forward to spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Velma is survived by her husband Richard of 57 years; her children, Rickey (Connie) Korthals, Madison, Lisa Korthals, Sioux Falls, S.D., Lynette (Tom) Wingen, Sioux Falls, and Lonna (Jeff) Hertel, Parker, S.D.; grandchildren Casey (James) Materese and their children Lyla and Maddox of Madison, Ryan (Brittney) Korthals and their children Morgan, Bristol, and Ryker of Burke, Jayden (Emily) Korthals of Parker and MaKenna Hertel (Alex Wormstadt) of Artesian, and Danica Wingen of Sioux Falls; her brother, Dave (Brenda) Hamm of Leota; three sisters-in-law, Marlys Pietz, of Sibley, Iowa, Janice Besta of Bersford, S.D., and Carla Todd of Sioux Falls.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Carrie Hamm; mother and father-in-law, Dick and Charlotte Korthals; four brothers-in-law, and many aunts and uncles.
