JOHANNA BERGHUIS

April 4, 1926 – March 11, 2022
Johanna Arida Berghuis, 95, formerly of Sioux Falls, S.D., passed away on March 11, 2022, in Slayton, Minn.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls. Her family will be present to greet friends for visitation on Wednesday, April 20, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Johanna Arida Mesman was born on April 4, 1926, in Edgerton, Minn., to Gerald and Hattie (DeMots) Mesman.
Johanna was united in marriage with William Holleman Sr. and this union was blessed with the birth of her son, William Jr. After the death of William Sr., she married Adrian Hartog in June of 1959 in Edgerton. Following his death in 1964, she made her home in Sioux Falls.
On May 10, 1969, Johanna was united in marriage with Jacob “Jack” Berghuis in Sioux Falls. Together the couple made their home in Sioux Falls and worked in their insurance office for over 40 years. In retirement Johanna and Jack wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for 13 years and traveled extensively. Johanna was a longtime member of Shalom Christian Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School and attended Friendship Class. Jack passed away on July 27, 2011.
In addition to traveling, Johanna enjoyed tending to her flower/vegetable gardens, baking, fishing with her nephew, Bob Mesman, spending countless holidays at the Tutt Farm and playing dominos.
Grateful for having shared her life are her niece, (whom Johanna considered her own family), Sue (James) Tutt, Lake Wilson, Minn.; their children, Tara (Kory) Scholten, Tiffany (Grant) Bose and Taylor (Samantha) Tutt and their children; great-niece, Lori (Chris) Meyer, Sioux Falls, and their daughter, Jordan (Evan) Fey and their children; and one sister, Josephine Windemuller of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Johanna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack Berghuis; son, William Holleman Jr.; daughter-in-law, Diane Holleman; granddaughter, Cheryl Holleman; five sisters, Angeline (Jim) Bosma, Elizabeth (Floyd) Grimmius, Lilian (Gerrit) Gritters, Evelyn (Jerry) Palmateer and Wilma (Dick) Olson; and two brothers, John (Jenn) Mesman and Gerald “Gerrit” (Carrie) Mesman; brother-in-law, Ed Windemuller.
