Marinus Landhuis

September 2, 1931 – April 19, 2021

Marinus (Rem) C. Landhuis, 87, died April 19, 2021, at Friendly Horizons memory care center in Sioux Center, Iowa. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 24, at Bethel Reformed Church in Leota.

He was born September 2, 1933, in rural Leota, Minn., to Henry and Marie (Bolluyt) Landhuis. He attended Edgerton High School and graduated from Northwestern jr. college in 1953. Later, he attended Mankato State University for one year before moving to Denver, Colo.

Marinus married Gladys Beckering on May 11, 1956, at the Bethel Reformed Church in Leota. To this union a daughter was born, Lynn Diane. They were married four years before Gladys’s death on June 6, 1960.

He married Roletta Harriett Spronk on September 18, 1961, at her parents’ home in rural Edgerton, Minn. They were blessed with a son, Dale Loren. Marinus and Roletta were married 40 years. Roletta passed away on June 13, 2002.

Marinus was enlisted in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1958 as well as served in the Navy reserve for two years. He was accepted into the NAVCAD program and flew F8/F9 fighter jets from an aircraft carrier, the Shangri-La.

He served as a deacon, choir member, and bus driver for the First Reformed Church in Denver, Colo., as well as a school board member for Denver Christian Schools.

He worked as a farm hand, gravel truck driver, threshing crew member, quality control inspector for Shell Chemical Company, salesman, electrician assistant, custodian for Titan Sand & Gravel, painter, and mail handler for the United States Postal Service.

As a student, Marinus played football, baseball and enjoyed gymnastics. As an adult, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, square dancing, watching car races, and traveling/cruises.

Marinus is survived by his children and their spouses: Lynn (Darrel) Wielenga, Dale (Barb) Landhuis; 8 grandchildren; brother-in-law, Willis Beckering; sisters-in-law: Verla Beckering; Faye Landhuis, and Bev Landhuis. He cherished his 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, and brothers: Nelson Landhuis, Howard Landhuis, Joe Landhuis, Henry Landhuis, Duane Landhuis, and sister, Marie Rave; brothers-in-law: Don Rave, Raymond E. Beckering, John Kuipers, Henry Spronk, and Esderd Spronk; sisters-in-law: Grace Landhuis, Clarice Landhuis, Esther Landhuis, Jeanette Kuipers, Henrietta Spronk, and Esther Spronk.
