CLARICE WIXON

March 21, 1941 – December 2, 2020

Clarice Wixon, 79, wife of Carroll Wixon (deceased), died in her sleep December 2, 2020, at United Living Community in Brookings, S.D.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartford, S.D.

Clarice was born March 21, 1941, on her family’s farm east of Edgerton, Minn., to Elbert and Nelvia (Prins) De Kam. She attended Leota Christian School in Leota, Minn., through the 8th grade.  She graduated from Southwest Christian High School in Edgerton in 1959. Clarice graduated from Calvin College and Nursing in conjunction with Blodget Memorial Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1963.

She started working as an RN for Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1963. While living in Sioux Falls she met Carroll Wixon and they were married Feb 27,1965. Clarice and Carroll lived in Sioux Falls until 1973. In 1972 Clarice and husband Carroll purchased a farm outside of Hartford, S.D. With the help of family and friends, they renovated the old farmhouse and moved there in the summer of 1973. Clarice’s career included RN (Sioux Valley Hospital), Head Nurse (Sioux Valley Hospital), South Dakota Disability Benefits Coordinator, and South Dakota Nursing Home Inspector.

Clarice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartford. Clarice enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, mowing the lawn on her riding mower, camping, fishing, and enjoying social and family get-togethers. Clarice was not a hunter (unless it involved a snake and a machete) but she loved to drive the truck in the deer hunting trips. Clarice loved going to auctions and getting (great deals) on the boxes of mystery items, all of which came home with us.

Grateful to have shared her life are her four sons, Steven Wixon, Palmer, Ark., Darin (Regina) Wixon, Brookings, S.D., Dan (Vickie) Wixon, Charlotte, N.C., and David (Lisa) Wixon, Centerville, S.D.; nine grandchildren; two brothers Gerry and Wes; and four sisters Bev, Gert, Gena, and Darla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Wixon; her parents, and her sisters, Elda and Nellie Ann (Toots).
