Herman Leonard Buys was born on May 10, 1935, to John and Johanna (Wiekeraad) Buys on the farm by Chandler, Minnesota. Herman was baptized at the Chandler Reformed Church and attended country school through the eighth grade, both in Chandler. In 1951, Herman was a hired man for his Uncle Bill until he purchased his own farm near Hardwick, Minnesota, in 1963.

On October 25, 1963, Herman was united in marriage to Dorothy Harms at the First Reformed Church in Inwood, Iowa. Herman and Dorothy made their home on the farm place, milking cows and farming the land. Herm lived on the farm for the remainder of his life. Dorothy passed away on March 21, 2017. Herman died on Sunday, October 25, 2020, at the Sanford Luverne Hospital in Luverne at the age of 85 years, 5 months, and 15 days.

Herman was a member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne. He was a member of the Men’s Brotherhood and Hardwick Community Club. Herm and Dorothy enjoyed pulling the Hardwick float through many parades. Herm enjoyed bowling, fixing puzzles (many times in the hayloft), going to auctions and especially toy sales to collect White and Oliver tractors, and listening to the South Dakota Old Time Fiddlers. Herm will be remembered by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren for wiggling his false teeth at them. He enjoyed eating at the Green Lantern and having a cup of coffee in Hardwick in the mornings. Sometimes he would have afternoon coffee in Kenneth. He enjoyed visiting or just driving around the countryside checking crops or to see what his neighbors were doing.

Herman will lovingly be remembered by his children, Leann (Dave) Hoogland of Hardwick and Melroy (Laura) Buys of Edgerton, Minnesota; siblings, LeRoy (Patsy) Buys of Chandler and Linda (Bob) Schelhaas of Edgerton; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Berdena Buys, Donna Buys, and Genevieve Vis; and several nieces and nephews.
