Margaret DeGroot was born on May 5, 1920, to Teunis and Martha (Kallemeyn) DeGroot in Murray County, Minnesota. Margaret was baptized and made profession of her faith at the Christian Reformed Church in Leota. She attended country school in District 83 through the 8th grade. Margaret helped her parents on the farm until she moved to Red Bluff, Calif., in 1953 where she attended business school. She was a secretary for a lumber company for 29 years before working in the business office at a school.

While in California, she was a member of the Red Bluff Presbyterian Church and was a member of the church circle, church choir, and was a volunteer at the hospital. Margaret also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and playing her accordion.

In 2002, Margaret retired and moved back to Chandler where she was a member of the Chandler Reformed Church. She continued to enjoy playing cards with friends and helping with the community quilters. In May of 2020, Margaret was surprised with a parade in her honor for her 100th birthday, since the community could not celebrate in the normal way due to COVID-19. After her 100th birthday, she allowed her accordion playing to be recorded for a church service.

Margaret entered Good Samaritan Home in July of 2020 and then moved to Pipestone County Hospice House on September 28, where she died on October 2, 2020.

Margaret is survived by two brothers, Marvin DeGroot of Edgerton, Lawrence (Johanna) DeGroot of Aurora, SD; and eleven nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Alice (Wilbert) Sas; brother, Hemet (Jane) DeGroot; sister-in-law, Johanna DeGroot, and one nephew, Teunis “Tony” DeGroot.
