December 25, 1973 – May 27, 2025

Matthew David Viel M.D., 51, of Holland, Michigan, passed away peacefully of natural causes in his sleep on May 27, 2025. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Graafschap Christian Reformed Church, Holland. Interment was in Gibson Cemetery, Holland.

Matt was a Christmas baby, born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on December 25, 1973, to Rick and Cyndee (Kamminga) Viel. Matt was raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School. He also graduated from Calvin College, Loma Linda Medical School and also received a master’s degree in medical ethics from Loma Linda University. Matt then started his medical professional career in South Dakota, then Edgerton, Minnesota, Delton, Michigan, and finally in Holland. 

He married Jennifer Bruins on June 28, 1997. They have two sons, James and Seth. Matt and Jen are members of Graafschap Christian Reformed Church. 

Matt is survived by his wife, Jennifer, their sons: James and Sydney Viel, and Seth Viel; his father Rick and Deb Viel, sister Mindy and Rob Sutton, mother-in-law Marty Bruins; in-laws: Eric and Janette Bruins, Emily and Steve Dyk; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother Cyndee Viel, brother-in-law Kevin Bruins, father-in-law Roger Bruins, and his nephew William Sutton.
