Glenn Kooiman

Glenn Kooiman passed away Thursday, November 14, 2024. A Celebration of Life was held on Monday, November 18, 2024, 10:30 am., at Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church, Leota, Minn., with Pastor Scott and Brian Kooiman officiating.

The congregation sang Holy, Holy, Holy, When Peace Like a River, and By the Sea of Crystal.  Amazing Grace was sung by Jay De Boer and  Gabriella Kooiman. Pallbearers were Ethan Blankespoor, Elliot Blankespoor, Jay De Boer, and Thomas Blankespoor, Honorary pallbearers were Kyle De Boer, Marissa Westra, Anna Kooiman, Gabriella Kooiman, and Benjamin Kooiman.

Interment was in the Leota Community Cemetery, Leota.

Glenn Kooiman was born November 23,1932, to Abe and Martina (Mouw) Kooiman on the family farm by Leota. He would call this home for 80 years. He attended Leota Christian Grade School, Southwest Christian High School in Edgerton for 2 years and completed his high school education at Western Christian in Hull, Iowa.

He was drafted and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. He served from May 1953 to May 1955. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to the family farm. In addition to farming, he delivered water, a family business his father began.

Glenn married Harriet Visser in 1961. They continued to live on the family farm until moving to the village of Leota in 2013. He retired from farming in 1997. For 15 years he was honored to be part of The Long Green Line, being employed by Garvin and Todd Vis.

He was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota. He served on the church council, several Christian school boards, Edgerton Elevator, and the Edgebrook Board. He was treasurer of Leota Township Board for 33 years. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Bible for Mission Thrift store and corresponding with inmates through the Crossroad Bible Ministries. Glenn and Harriet enjoyed traveling to many destinations both near and far.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 63 years, Harriet; children, Brenda (Mark) Blankespoor of Sioux Falls, S.D., Bonnie (Jeff) De Boer of Edgerton, Minn., Brian (Lori) Kooiman of Argyle, Texas; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Verla (Willis) Beckering, sisters-in-law: Jo Goslinga, Freddy (Al) VandeKamp.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Martina, siblings: Peter (Bertha) Kooiman, Genevieve (Anthony) Sas, Mavis (Arnie) Schaap, and Ardella (Gordon) DeBoer
