Tena Winkelhorst
February 26, 1919 – July 29, 2024 Tena Winkelhorst, age 105, of Leota, died Monday, July 29, 2024, at the Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton. Funeral services were 11 a.m., Friday, August 2, at the Bethel Reformed Church, Leota, officiated by Pastor David Vanter Leest. Burial was in the Leota Community Cemetery. She was born February 26, 1919, in Edgerton, to Henry and Jennie (Van Lant) Baker. She graduated from Edgerton Public High School in 1938 and attended Brady and Rogers School of Beauty Culture in Minneapolis in 1939. In 1955, she attended the Virginia Farrell Academy of Advanced Hair Styling in Detroit, Michigan. Tena was united in marriage to Gerrit Winkelhorst on June 10, 1953, in Edgerton. After their marriage, they made their home in Leota and raised one son, Loren. Tena worked in Luverne, Chicago, Edgerton, and Leota a total of 55 years. She was a member of the National Hairdressers Association, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Leota Friendship Builders until it dissolved. She was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Leota, where she was secretary of the Esther Circle for many years. In later years, Gerrit and Tena enjoyed spending winters in Texas. Tena enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting, and spending time with friends. Tena is survived by her son, Loren (Darla) of West Bend, Iowa; grandchildren, Evan (Brooke), Ross (Kayla) of West Bend Iowa, and Ryan (Parker) of Leadville, Colo.; and six great-grandchildren, Keira, Ryker, Kymora, Jax, Tate and Ava. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerrit; and sisters, Katherine Oleson of Westbrook and Lillian Nagelhout of New Port Richey, Florida.
