GREGORY “GREG” BLOM
February 26, 1959 – June 24, 2024
Gregory Ray Blom, known fondly as Greg to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024, in Rapid City, S.D, at the age of 65. Born on February 26, 1959, in Pipestone, Minn., Greg’s life was a testament to the joy of simplicity, the warmth of friendship, the pursuit of adventure, and the beauty of nature.
Greg treated everyone he met as if they were a neighbor on the farm down the street. He trusted people, and loved to help others in any way he could. He knew and loved God. He loved classic rock. He loved to fish, travel, and explore the mountains. He loved the Vikings.
Greg was always looking for his next adventure, and yet the smallest things brought him so much joy. Whether it was a hike behind his house, a fishing hole, or a good conversation. He loved to travel, and enjoyed sharing stories from his travels around the world. If you were a friend at any point in his life, chances are Greg still talked about great memories with you 30 years later. One of his most precious items he kept was his address book filled with names and phone numbers of family and friends…many of which he still called through his last days. Social etiquette around time of day didn’t apply to him. He just called when he was thinking of you.
A few noted life lessons Greg’s daughter learned from her dad, and will forever hold onto: Roll the windows down. Fun doesn’t always need a plan. Always get in the water. If you treat every experience like a core memory, there are very few experiences in life that aren’t worth trying. Don’t be afraid to be goofy, and always have a great story in your back pocket, you might see someone’s face light up. Life is too short to hold onto many of the stresses and anxieties that weigh so many down. Love God.
Greg graduated from SW Minnesota Christian High School. He made a point to touch the hearts of everyone he met with his friendly demeanor and genuine interest in their well-being.
Greg is survived by his family. His daughter whom he named after his mother: Lucy Forgione (Erik). His legacy continues through his cherished granddaughter: Quinn Forgione. His sister whom he always looked up to: Karen (Walter) Loewen, and brothers whom he loved deeply and always shared stories about: Dennis Blom, Stephan Blom (Gala), and Phil Blom (Debbie).
Greg’s parents, who preceded him in death, were his heroes. He always spoke incredibly highly of them. Greg will be remembered for his spirit of kindness and adventure. This spirit will live on in the memories of his family and friends.
Greg’s life will be celebrated in the hearts and stories of his family and friends, as they continue to honor his memory by embracing the values he lived by—kindness, friendliness, and a thirst for adventure. Rest in peace, dear Greg. Your spirit will forever wander the mountains you loved, and your legacy will continue to inspire us all.
