SWC/E Track Teams Conference Champs
By Brian Tschetter –
On Thursday, May 19, the Southwest Christian/Edgerton track team took part in the Red Rock Conference Track Meet held at the Mountain Lake Track Complex. Track athletes had decent temperatures for the day but a fairly stiff wind from the west greeted the runners down the front stretch. Seven teams from the conference participated in the meet. They were: Adrian / Ellsworth, Heron Lake – Okabena / Fulda, Hills-Beaver Creek, Mountain Lake Area – Comfrey, Murray County Central, Southwest Christian / Edgerton and Westbrook-Walnut Grove-Red Rock Central.
In the girls’ division for team points, the Eagle squad had a great day as they took wins in 7 events. Congratulations to all who won a conference champion title in their event. The multiple wins with many other great performances propelled the squad to the team championship title with 191.5 points. MCC followed with 142.5. H-BC was third with 129. HL-O/F (72.5) and MLA-C (71) went fourth and fifth was A/E (47), with W-WG/RRC (35.5) rounding out the field. Congratulations to the Eagle girls on their hard work and effort in taking first place in the conference meet. That comes with a lot of hard work and determination in practice. They scored points in every event and scored in the top three in 13 of the 18 events. Having depth in all events makes for a great team. In fact, in the conference meet, they won in 2013, were runner-up in 2014 and have won it every year since. That’s quite the impressive run.
As much as the girls dominated the field, the boys dominated even more. Their efforts brought them an impressive team total of 198. MLA-C gathered up 115 points for the runner-up spot. Third place went to A/E with 109. H-BC (108.33) and HL-O/F (81.33) went fourth and fifth. MCC (56.99) was sixth and WWG-RRC (24) took seventh. The boys dominated as they captured wins in 10 events. Congratulations to the conference champions in those events. A very big congratulations to the Eagle boys for their consistency over the years – they were runner-up or champions six straight years. That too, is an impressive run.
The SWC / E team will compete in the Section 3A, Southwest Sub-Section meet on Thursday, May 26, in Luverne. Those that qualify from the Sub-Section meet will compete on Thursday, June 2, at the Section 3A meet in Pipestone.
