E/SW Softball Blanked By Luverne

By Mike Drooger –

On Tuesday, May 17, the Edgerton/SW MN Christian softball team traveled to New Ulm to take on the Greyhounds of New Ulm Cathedral. During most of the 110-mile trip, the bus rode through rain showers. Near Madelia the rain stopped. Unfortunately for the softball team, about the time the first pitch was thrown at 4:30, the showers returned. The game lasted until the bottom of the fourth inning when the umpires deemed the quagmire infield unsafe.

The rainout washed out hits from Alyda Vande Griend, Morgan Pap, Kathryn Prins, and two hits from Makenna Moss. Pap’s hit was a homer for two runs batted in. Moss’ second hit plated Ana Veldkamp who had walked.

The Dutchmen weren’t scheduled to play again until two days later, which gave their uniforms, softballs, socks, cleats, and gloves time to dry out. On Thursday, May 19, the 16-3 Luverne Cardinals ventured to Edgerton for a non-conference affair for the regular season’s final home game. Even though it was a non-conference game, the Cardinals didn’t back down. They brought forth their best effort including putting Gracie Nath in the pitcher’s circle, and they won 4-0. Nath, along with Worthington’s Haley Grimmius, is an elite pitcher in southwest Minnesota. The good news for opponents of Worthington is Grimmius is a senior. The bad news for teams that have Luverne on their schedule is Nath is a just a sophomore.
