E/SW Softballers Quickly Dispose of HL-O/F to Win Conference Title

By Mike Drooger –

The weather forecasters predicted a major storm to hit the Edgerton area around 5:30 on May 12.  With that in mind, the start time of the softball game between the Edgerton/SW MN Christian Flying Dutchmen vs. the Coyotes of Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda was moved up to 4:00.  So much hitting, running, sliding and scoring in such a short amount of time has probably never been done like it was on May 12.  E/SW stroked 10 hits, collected eight walks, two hit batters, and a handful of steals in just over an hour en route to an 18-0 win to finish the 2022 season with a 10-0 Red Rock Conference record.

The last time the Dutchmen lost a conference game was May 3, 2016 in Mountain Lake.  They lost 7-0 to the Wolverines after having been swept in a doubleheader the day before.  Since 5/3/16, the Dutchmen have gone 54-0 against conference opponents.  Do you remember what happened in 2016?  After that loss to MLA, the Dutchmen went 15-1, which included a trio of wins in the state tournament for a first place finish.

At Edgerton on May 12, Ana Veldkamp scored three runs and knocked in three.  Alyda Vande Griend scored a pair and had four RBI.  Kathryn Prins scored three times.  Paris Van Dyke and Elliot Fleischman each had two ribbies.  Other runs were scored by:  Van Dyke, Morgan Pap, Brenalyn Smit (2), Avery Fey (2), Myah Vander Maten (2), Kinsie Nelson, and Vivian “Grandma” Dyk.
