E/SW Softball Takes Double Dip From Falcons

By Mike Drooger –

Rescheduling high school softball games is generally a certainty in Minnesota, and that rescheduling can be a headache for athletic directors, coaches, players, fans, and umpires. But the Edgerton/SW MN Christian Flying Dutchmen softball team welcomed the postponement of their game vs. the Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove Falcons on April 14. Because the game was rained out in April, the Falcons and Dutchmen had a doubleheader in Edgerton on May 5, which saved the Dutchmen delegation from traveling the 76 miles it takes to get to Sanborn where the Falcons play their softball games.

The Dutchmen found their hitting spikes on the 5th, pounding out 30 hits in 61 at bats. They also were given 11 walks in the two games by the RRC/WWG hurlers en route to a doubleheader sweep on scores of 14-4 and 16-2.

The Falcons looked like world-beaters in the first inning of game one. The leadoff batter doubled and scored on a Dutchmen error. The third batter of the game belted a two-run homer for a quick Falcon lead of 3-0.

E/SW got two runs back in their first at bat thanks to Makenna “Big Mac” Moss. While McDonald’s boasts of two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame bun, E/SW’s Big Mac could boast of a two-run double that just missed going over the fence by inches.

The Dutchmen tacked on three more runs in the second. One run scored on a wild pitch and another scored on a Falcon error. The third run came home when Paris Van Dyke hit a ball nearly in the same spot as Moss’ that plated Ana Veldkamp.

A couple of bad hop singles and an E/SW error led to a run for the visitors in the third. If not for a great diving catch by right fielder Kinsie Nelson, and a pair of Van Dyke strikeouts, it possibly could have been worse.

A pitch to start the fourth inning resulted in a hit for Veldkamp. She eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 6-4 Dutchmen lead.

Pinch hitter Maddie Feikema, who went 5-for-5 on the day with six RBIs, got a hit in the fifth. Nelson laid down a nifty bunt for a hit. Feikema scored on a Veldkamp slap single. Nelson and Veldkamp scored on an Alyda Vande Griend single that came after she had fouled off a few pitches.

The Dutchmen 10-runned the Falcons after six innings ,getting five runs in the final frame. Moss, Kathryn Prins, Brenalyn Smit, Feikema, and Vande Griend all scored with two RBIs each coming from Feikema and Vande Griend.
