SWC/E Track Team Breaking Records

Panther II Invitational

On Tuesday, April 19, the Southwest Christian/Edgerton track team traveled to Tracy to compete in the Panther II Invitational. The meet was planned for ten teams but three teams decided not to attend due to the cold weather. Teams involved were: Murray County Central, SWC/E, Wabasso, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, Heron Lake – Okabena / Fulda, Yellow Medicine East, and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

The meet was dry but that was about the only positive with the weather. Cold temps and a brisk wind made for less than ideal conditions.

The SWC/E squads had an excellent day verses the competition as the girls and boys both won the team titles. The girls tallied 190 points which was well ahead of second place MCC with 145. The rest of the top 5 were: TMB (64), RTR (53) and HLOF (40). The SWC/E boys’ team title was won by even more as they scored 161. TMB was a distant second with 113. RTR was third with 89 followed by HLOF (76) and MCC (47) to round out the top five.

The squads combined for 14 event wins – eight by the girls and 6 by the boys. The big highlight of the meet was when senior thrower Jacob Fischer broke the Edgerton Public School record in the discus. Mike Moss previously held the record from 2019 with a distance of 135-08. Fischer had a personal best throw last year of 133-04. He launched all four of his throws over the 140 mark with the best and new record distance of 150-02. Congratulations to Jacob on this achievement!

Windom Eagle Invitational

Reece Wassink

Congratulations Reece on such a great accomplishment!

The Southwest Christian / Edgerton track team traveled to Windom on Tuesday, April 21, to participate in the Windom Eagle Invitational. This was held a week later than it’s originally scheduled date due to cold weather. The extra week provided a great day for a track meet. The sun shone with just a light breeze and temps in the upper 50’s. Four teams were able to attend the new date: Windom Area, Worthington Redwood Valley and Southwest Christian / Edgerton. This was a smaller meet team wise, but with the other three teams all from the Big South Conference, competition was still very good.

With the nice weather came some very good performances by our athletes. The team captured nine-first place finishes and many top 3 finishes. On top of the list for highlights is senior Reece Wassink’s performance. She claimed first place in the shot put with a throw of over 30 feet and first place in the discus as well. That throw however, broke the Edgerton Public School record. Earlier this year, Reece has thrown for 107-01. The record stood since 2001, a 109-01 heave from Teresa Vander Beek. Reece set the new mark at 113-04.

Pipestone Area Invitational

The Southwest Christian / Edgerton track team traveled to Pipestone on Saturday, April 23, to participate in the Pipestone Area Invitational.  Temperatures were in the mid 60’s, which is great for a meet.  But the wind was a major factor.  A hard wind of 30 to 35 mph blew into runner’s faces as they tried to battle down the front stretch.  Conditions made it impossible to hold the high jump and pole vault events so they were not held.  This was an 10 team meet with teams from Adrian / Ellsworth, Heron Lake – Okabena / Fulda, Hills – Beaver Creek, Luverne, Murray County Central, Pipestone Area, Russell – Tyler – Ruthton, Southwest Christian / Edgerton, Lakeview, and Tracy – Milroy – Balaton.

Meet highlights included eight event wins.  Seven of them were on the boys’ side.  Two of those wins included school records that were pushed to a greater distances.  Jacob Fischer upped his discus distance from 150-02 to 154-0 for the Edgerton Public school record.  He set the previous mark on Tuesday of this week.  Micah Schaap had the SWC long jump record of 22-04.75.  He set that mark last year at the Section 3A meet in Redwood Valley.  He soared far past that distance as he leapt to 23-03.  Congratulations to both athletes as they continue to push themselves and excel in their events.

Four school records have been set in this week’s meets.  That’s quite an accomplishment by the athletes!  Another highlight was the return of Savannah Schultz to competition after ACL/MCL/meniscus tears suffered last fall.  Its great to see her active again!
