SWC/E Track Season Starts
By Brian Tschetter –
The Southwest Christian/Edgerton track team traveled to Luverne on Monday, April 4, to participate in the Invitational. For an early season meet, conditions were pretty good. The wind wasn’t too big of a factor and temperatures were in the low 50’s. The six team meet had squads from SWC/E, Luverne, Hills-Beaver Creek, Adrian / Ellsworth, Jackson County Central, and Worthington. This was an early season meet that allowed for five entries into events and two relays could be run. No awards were given but point totals were kept.
Then on Saturday, April 9, the Southwest Christian / Edgerton track team made the journey to Garretson, SD, to take part in the Jesse James Invitational Track Meet. After having the Thursday meet in Slayton postponed due to weather it was good to get another meet in. This was our first time attending this meet. We were met with very stiff competition with many quality track teams in attendance. In all, 15 teams competed. They are listed below in the team results. The big meet, combined with four entries allowed per team, made for a near seven hour meet. The morning started very chilly with temps just in the 30’s but as the day went along it warmed to the low 50’s. A substantial wind greeted runners straight in their face as they finished the home stretch.
Meet highlights were the boys team capturing five event wins including an epic, come-from-behind win in the 4X400. Also, making the highlight reel was a side-by-side 800 meter run between Levi Van Dyken and Bennett Wassenaar of Sioux Falls Christian. And then there’s Micah Schaap! Micah anchored that relay, which he made up 4 to 5 seconds on the other competitor, won the open 400 by nearly 2 seconds, captured both the long jump (near 22 feet) and the triple jump. His triple jump of 44-08 broke 3 records. It upped his own school record he set last year by 1 inch. It also broke the meet record and the facility record for the track. That means no one has ever jumped that distance at the Garretson T & F Complex at any meet they host. These results earned him the Male Most Outstanding Performance Award. Congratulations to Micah on his acheivements at the meet. The 5th event win came from Jacob Fischer as he outdistanced the 48 discus competitors. Another highlight was Grant Busker clearing a career high 5-10 in high jump.
