State Honor Choir Congratulations to Grant Busker and Kylee Brands, SWC sophomores, who participated in the State Honor Choir on Saturday, February 19. State Honor Choir is equivalent to a State Tourney for an athletic sport. Over 700 auditions were sent in with less than a third of those chosen for this honor. SWC is the smallest school represented at this event with most other students coming from the metro area. Many of the other ”small” schools represented are still about 3 times the size of SWC. Grant and Kylee rehearsed all day on Saturday with a group performance at 5:30 p.m. Thank you Grant and Kylee for representing SWC and using your God-given talents to give praise through song and your presence at State Honor Choir!
SWC musical production
The SWC High School drama department has been busy preparing for the spring musical – ”Aladdin”!
The story you know and love has been given the royal treatment! Aladdin and his three friends, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, are down on their luck until Aladdin discovers a magic lamp and the Genie who has the power to grant three wishes. Wanting to earn the respect of the princess, Jasmine, Aladdin embarks on an adventure that will test his will and his moral character. With expanded characters, new songs, and more thrills, this new adaptation of the beloved story will open up “a whole new world” for the student performers and the audience!
Please mark your calendar for Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2. These are the two performance dates for this year’s musical starting at 7:00 p.m. both evenings at the elementary campus.
The admission cost for adults is $7.00 and $5.00 for students.
Dordt Honor Band SWC students Grant Busker, Annika Dyk, Vivian Dyk, Julianne Eisma, Kathryn Prins, and Caleb Fey participated in the Dordt Honor Band Festival on Friday, February 18, working with directors and Saturday, February 19, with a 1:00 p.m. mass concert in the BJ Haan building. During the Saturday afternoon performance, Kathryn Prins was presented with one of the four Dordt Honor Band Outstanding Student Awards given during the event. Kathryn received her award along with a $4,000 scholarship if she wishes to continue her post-high school education at Dordt University.
Winterim 2022 is in the books, and we want to express our thanks to the many individuals who served as mentors to our students, instructed a class, provided transportation or chaperone duties, shared their variety of talents and wisdom, and for the prayers offered for safety, good health, and for an enriching ”non-traditional” classroom setting. We had 42 students who arranged a three-day internship/shadow opportunity in the areas such as accounting, banking, veterinary services, welding, education, small engine repair, diesel mechanic, pork production, animal nutrition, hair stylist, and marketing, just to name a few. Twenty students signed up for Engage Global. Engage Global is a ministry focused training and engages individuals in the global mission God has given us to bring the Gospel to unreached people groups. During their time with Engage Global students explored God’s word along with interaction with different cultural groups leading them to engagement in God’s work.
The remaining one-half of the student body participated in classes or a serve project arranged by the school with input from the students. These classes were Ag Strategies and Technologies, Photography, Cultural Cuisine, Comparison Shopping, Small Business, Robotics and Engineering, and the SERVE project at Inspiration Hills.
When you have the opportunity, ask a SWC high school student about their Winterim 2022 experience. If you would be interested in teaching or hosting students for a Winterim class next year, please contact the high school office and we will add you to our potential class/internship list.
Homecoming 2022
During the week of January 31 – February 4, SWC was able to change things up a bit for the week to celebrate homecoming week. All rolled into this week were the fun dress up/activity days (the favorite this year was – Anything But Your Backpack for which students brought to school other means to carry around their books and other supplies as seen in the pictures. They included seed corn bag, suitcases, wagons, grocery carts and many other fun ideas), basketball games, recognizing alumni, friendly competitions between classes, junior class meals as fundraisers for the senior DC trip, alumni playing in pep band, and alumni half-time competition. The friendly competitions between classes included “Name That Tune,” “SWC Family Feud,” Pond Hockey, Relay Races, and Pudding Drop.
For one day of Homecoming Week, students carried their books in anything but a backpack.
