SCHOOL NEWS from SWC Grades 3-5

This week’s School News comes from SWC Grades 3 through 5!

5th grade news

Spirit Week/I Love to Read month

Last week was homecoming week at the high school campus! The grade school wanted to join in celebrating with a few dress up days. We clashed on Monday and wore ‘skittles’ colors on Wednesday. On Friday, February 4, the grade schoolers wore black and gold! It is also “I love to READ month!” We paired up with another class and read books with them in the halls. It was so fun to see classes reading together and the hallway full of school spirit.

Micrography

The 5th graders also created some really cool art called micrography. Micrography is artwork created by writing very small words instead of using lines to create a picture! Students had fun doing a portrait in a new way. For writing, the students created a bio poem in which they told things they liked, feared, shared, and wanted to see someday. We paired the poem with their micrography portrait!

Human Body

The 5th grade class just began learning about the human body! What an amazing body God has created us to have. We will be learning how our body can fight off diseases, pump blood, breathe, blink and so much more! Some of these things happen without us having any say in the matter. We will be standing in awe of God’s wisdom when he created us. “For I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” – Ps. 139:14

Leadership/Morning Choice

We start most mornings off with something we call Morning Choice in 5th grade. This is a great way to get kids excited to start the day with something they choose. The choices include a math game, DEAR time, mind games, Duo-Lingo to learn a little Spanish, and Leadership!

Their favorite choices are the math game or leadership. Leadership involves us going to the Kindergarten rooms to read, do activities, or to help with the Kindergartners! This has been a great partnership between the Kindergartners and us. The Kindergartners really look forward to their 5th grade buddies coming to help, and the 5th graders are able to put their leadership skills to the test.

4th grade news

Things are out of this world in 4th grade! We’ve been learning all about our solar system and other things in the universe like galaxies, nebulas, supernovas, and black holes. We’ve come across some pretty amazing facts. Did you know that Earth is 93 million miles away from the sun? That is a distance large enough for every planet in the solar system to fit between Earth and the Sun. Wow! Jupiter is the largest planet. It’s so large that 1,300 Earths would fit inside Jupiter!  There is a huge storm on Jupiter called the Great Red Spot. It has been raging for over 300 years!

Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

Every new and amazing fact we learn about space certainly points to a mighty Creator who has the power to design and create some really awesome things! Perhaps the most amazing fact of all is that we haven’t seen it all. We are still exploring and discovering new things in the universe. Space is truly amazing!

As a final project for this unit on space, fourth graders created their own 3-D model of the solar system. We had some amazing projects again this year! Students used everything from frosted sugar cookies and rice crispy balls to styrofoam balls for their planets. We had asteroid belts made out of popcorn, clay balls, pea rock, glass beads, and Nerds candy. There were lots of creative ideas! The fourth graders really worked hard on this project, and they sure learned a lot!

3rd grade news

In Bible class, while studying Ancient Egypt, the third grade students wrote and presented reports to the class. They also had a great time making pyramids.

I Love to Read Month is here! On Friday the 3rd graders enjoyed reading books with the first graders.
