Dutchmen Lose Shootout In Westbrook

By Mike Drooger –

Let’s begin with the good news for the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen boys’ basketball team and their game at Westbrook on December 21. They scored more points than they did their previous game at Tyler. And they did that in the first half! At Tyler, the Dutchmen could manage just 16 points. At Westbrook, they passed that at the 5:20 mark of the first half when Jacob Fischer cashed in a pair of free throws. Speaking of Jacob Fischer—here’s some really good news—the always hustling senior scored 28 points against the Chargers of WWG. He lit it up from downtown, making six from deep (nine attempts), and he didn’t miss a free throw (6-for-6). Fischer also yanked down 11 rebounds. The Dutchmen, who suffered 40 turnovers against RTR, had just 17 at Westbrook. They were all encouraging signs.

Unfortunately there was bad news, most of which came on the defensive end of the court. The Chargers finished the game 26-for-52 from the field. They were 11-for-26 from beyond the arc. Before WWG Head Coach Derrick Jenniges began substituting in the second half, his Chargers were 26-for-40 from the field (65 percent). They were 11-for-18 from three-point land with their starters in the game. When EHS applied pressure on the perimeter, the Chargers worked the ball into the paint for easy buckets. When the Dutchmen plugged the middle, the Chargers hit from deep. It was a case of “pick your poison” for Edgerton, and they suffered a 66-41 loss.

Fischer nailed a pair of treys in the first few minutes of the game (assists to Blake Schultz and Nolan Buckridge), but the Dutchmen were down 6-10. When Fischer later scored after pulling down a rebound of his own missed shot, the Chargers were up 17-8. It kept getting worse as the first half progressed. WWG nailed a three-pointer just before the buzzer. It was their eighth of the first half, and they led 49-23.
