SCHOOL NEWS from SWC Grades 6-8
6th grade school news
In sixth grade Literature, we have been reading several novels. One that we particularly liked was the book Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. In the book, we learn about the main character Auggie and how even when it was not being shown to him, he was willing to show kindness to those around him. One of our activities was ”Kindness Day.”
The students went around the room and wrote a compliment on each of their classmates’ printed faces. Students were able to reflect on the goodness they see in others. This goes along with what we have been learning in the Bible, where we focus on Jesus’ ministry and the love He showed to everyone around him. We studied Jesus’ crucifixion, and how He was the once-for-all sacrifice for our sins.
6th-8th grade science news
After doing several labs in September to familiarize ourselves with the scientific method, middle school science classes have each delved into their field of study.
Seventh graders made some really cool cell models to help learn about all the parts of a cell. Some of the edible models were very tasty too! We are now discovering how genes give them their traits, like eye color and hair color. We looked at how our DNA is copied to make new cells and are amazed at how intricately God has created the microscopic parts of our body to function at such a high level!
Rocks seemed kind of boring to 8th graders at first, but after looking at rock fragments under a microscope, we have a newfound appreciation for their beauty! Eighth graders have also been studying plate tectonics and how the movement of earth’s plates contribute to earthquakes and volcanoes. God’s power is truly amazing!
8th grade school news
In order to teach principles of financial literacy, the 8th Grade class has been involved in a ”Classroom Economy.” This is a year-long project which involves students applying for classroom jobs such as cleaning windows, designing bulletin boards, or working as bank tellers to manage the classroom money. In addition to applying for a job, students also have the opportunity to create their own business where they can sell a homemade product or offer a service. This year, students have created businesses selling baked goods, vinyl stickers, and even a locker cleaning service! Each month students create a budget based on their expected income and expenses.
8th grade reads murder novel
The 8th graders recently took on the challenge of reading a novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The novel is titled The Hound of the Baskervilles. This novel is a murder mystery, and the students enjoyed trying to guess who the murderer might be. Just before the suspect was revealed, both sections of the 8th graders wrote down the motive, opportunities, and the clues for each of their suspects. Some of the students were close and a few going the wrong directions. However, the task of looking for clues and giving their theories throughout the novel was an enjoyable time.
