Panthers End Eagle Season
By Skip Hunter –
Game 2 of the Section 3A tournament found the SWC Eagles traveling to a familiar place, Tracy. The Eagles have faced the TMB Panthers at least 4 times consecutively over the past several years always with the same result. Last Friday night was no different as they went down to a 3-0 defeat by the scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-8. The Panthers play fundamentally sound volleyball in all facets of the game and that doomed the Eagles.
The teams traded hitting errors to start game 1. SWC scored the first offensive point when Myah Vander Maten passed to Ana Veldkamp who set senior hitter Morgan Pap for a kill. After a TMB score, Pap picked up another kill though Vander Maten and Veldkamp switched roles. After the Panthers jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Rylie Fey was the recipient of a Vander Maten pass and Veldkamp set for a kill. The Eagles went 7 serves without an offensive point until Pap passed to Veldkamp who set Fey for a kill. Veldkamp then lefthanded a ball over the net after getting the ball from Tyra Snder. Mackenzie Pap had a kill and Veldkamp another one to make the score 15-9. Mo. Pap had a block and Fey another kill but it was not enough as the Eagles went down to a 25-10 loss in game 1.
The Eagles scored a few more points in game 2 but with the same result, a defeat. Mo. Pap and Fey scored in the early going using Vander Maten passes and Veldkamp sets. Whitney Pap got in to the action with a kill and Ma. Pap a block to make the score 9-4. Fey killed an overpass before Ma. Pap had a kill as did Paris Van Dyke as the Eagles struggled to stay in the game at 13-7. Ma. Pap picked up another kill and Fey a block to make the score 17-10. Fey smacked a ball off the top of the tape for a kill, Mo, Pap had another block but the Eagles trailed 23-12. SWC’s final point was scored by Van Dyke using a Snyder pass and a Veldkamp set.
