EHS Volleyball Battles The Best

By Mike Drooger –

The vastly-improved-from-previous-seasons Edgerton Flying Dutchmen volleyball team was chomping at the bit to get the chance to play the Coyotes of Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda. They finally got that chance on Monday night, October 18, at Edgerton.

It turned out to be one of those matches where either team could have won. A made play here, another one made there, and the Dutchmen could easily have defeated the Coyotes. It would have been HLOF’s first conference defeat, but, as it turned out, the Coyotes won three sets to one. Set scores were 24-26, 25-14, 26-24, and 25-23.

An Alyda Vande Griend kill to the corner in set one gave the Dutchmen a 15-11 lead. Later, after the Coyotes had pulled to within 15-14, Vande Griend got another kill to give EHS a lead of 22-18. Then the wiry sophomore registered an ace block for a 23-18 advantage. But back came HLOF, as one would expect from a team with an overall record of 19-6 with most of those six defeats coming against much larger schools.

A Dutchmen overpass on a Coyote serve resulted in a kill, and Edgerton clung to a lead of 23-22. Then Reece Wassink slyly pushed the ball over the net catching the Coyotes unaware, and it was 24-22.

The Coyotes tied it at 24 before Vande Griend got another block. Haley Wieck had just one kill in the first set, but it came at the most opportune time. Her smash down the line was the 26th and final point for a 1-0 set lead.
