Dutchmen Lose To Big Patriots

If you have a pile of money you’d like to invest in a grocery store, a great place would be the city of Hull, Iowa, (pop. 2,089) where the grocery store recently closed. Or you could construct a store in Hills, Steen, or Beaver Creek hoping to feed the Hills-Beaver Creek Patriot football players. H-BC has nine players listed over 200 pounds, led by Cody Moser. If the H-BC drama club ever presents the play David and Goliath, Moser—who is listed on the program at 6’6” and 312 pounds—would be perfect for the role of Goliath.
The Dutchmen have six players that are at least 200 pounds, but two of them—Jacob and Jared Fischer—did not dress on Wednesday night, October 20, due to injury. Flying Dutchmen Carter Amundson was named KDWC radio’s Player of the Game. He summed up the H-BC size situation in his postgame interview with two words: “They’re huge!”
The Patriots also have a decent quarterback in Oliver Deelstra, and a solid running back in Cole Baker to perform behind that massive line. Baker “The Touchdown Maker” (12 rushes, 182 yards) crossed the goal line four times on the ground and one time via a pass from nine yards out, as H-BC cruised past Edgerton 43-8 on a soggy night in Edgerton.
With senior Jacob Fischer out of commission this game, Tyler Van’t Hof (freshman) was summoned to start. He and his mates on the offensive line did an admiral job against the giants of H-BC (EHS amassed 178 yards on the ground), but Baker turned out to be too much to contain for the Edgerton defense.
Because eighth-grade running back Michael Gunnink (6 rushes, 18 yards) was a little banged up, freshman Dylan Luce became the rushing workhorse for Coach Andrew Fleischman. “Michael carried the ball 30 times on Saturday. Playing on Wednesday gave him very little time to recover so we limited his carries,” Coach Fleischman explained.
