Trojans Vanquish Eagles

By Skip Hunter –

Last Thursday night, Otober 14, the SWC Eagles entertained the Worthington High School Trogans. The crowd was entertaining as well with their various choices of costumes. One Accord harmoniously sang the national anthem and the match was on. WHS is a 2AA school and came into the night with a 14-13 record. Throughout the match it was apparent that they have many pieces of a fine team, and they dispatched the Eagles 3-0.

The home team jumped out to a 3-0 lead as the Trojans opened with 3 hitting errors. The errors continued until WHS scored offensively to make the score 4-2. The Eagles’ first offensive point was a Makenna Brands ace serve. The teams played back and forth with ties at 7, 8, and11. The Eagles’ first kill came on a pass from Emma Nibbelink to Ana Veldkamp who set Morgan Pap for a kill. WHS led 15-14 at that juncture to the game. The Eagles continued to struggle on offense as Coach Zylstra used both of her timeouts to try to right the ship. Late in the game the Eagles scored 3 offensive points. First Pap passed to Veldkamp who set Riley Fey for a kill. Mackenzie Pap had a block and then Myah Vander Maten passed to Veldkamp who set Fey for another kill. However, the score was 23-18 at that point, and the Eagles could do nothing more as they lost 25-20.

After SWC scored first in game 2, Nibbelink to Veldkamp to Mo. Pap, they could do little else. They were trailing 11-4 when Brands passed to Veldkamp who set Fey for a kill. It was 10 serves later before a Mo. Pap block was their next positive play. Later Brands had 2 more passes to Veldkamp who set Fey and then Paris Van Dyke for kills. Fey also had an ace serve during the run and the Eagles fell 25-16 in game 2.
