Eagle Soccer Comes Up Short

By Skip Hunter –

The SWC soccer team started the second season at home against the Mankato Loyola Crusaders. The Crusaders had taken down the Eagles 3-0 in a game earlier this year. But the Eagles hoped that their recent improvement in play would give them an edge. The two teams played fairly evenly, but the visitors managed 3 goals to 1 for the Eagles.

In the first half the Eagles failed to clear a corner kick and a Crusader was Johnny-on-the-spot to clean up the mess. With 3 minutes left in the first half a solo ML player took a shot from a sharp angle and scored. On the play, goalie Jarett Kuipers made contact with the frame and suffered an injury to his mouth and teeth. Logan Bleyenberg took over at goal and performed admirably for the rest of the game.

The visitors scored once in the second half when a shot bounced crazily by Bleyenberg. The Eagles picked up a goal to make the score 3-1. Levi Van Dyken lofted a corner kick that Aiden Schaap was able to put into the net.

The Crusaders had 5 corner kicks and 9 shots on goal. The Eagles had 2 corners and 7 shots on goal. The Eagles ended up 4-8-2 for the year.
