Falcons Take Down Eagles

By Skip Hunter –

Last Monday the SWC Eagle volleyball team took on the Red Rock Central Falcons. Though the Falcons were ranked higher than the Eagles, the Eagles had been improving. Except for game 2, the Eagles were very competitive but were unable to secure the win, losing 3-1 by the scores of 22-25, 14-25, 25-17, 18-25.

After Annika Dyk sang the national anthem, Ana Veldkamp opened the match with an ace serve. The Eagles went ahead 3-0 with a Morgan Pap block. Later Lindsie Fick passed to Veldkamp who set Rylie Fey for a kill and SWC led 5-2. After RRC closed the gap to 5-4, kills by Pap and Fey gave the Eagles an 8-4 advantage. The Eagles continued to play well using a Myah Vander Maten pass to Veldkamp who set Pap for a kill to make the score 13-7. RRC began to close the gap but Pap passed to Veldkamp who set Whitney Pap to keep the Eagles ahead 14-11. With SWC clinging to a 1 point lead, Vander Maten passed to Veldkamp who set Fey for another kill. However, the tide turned and RRC went ahead 19-16 before Vander Maten got the ball to Veldkamp who set Mackenzie Pap for a kill. The Eagles cut the lead to 20-19 when Tyra Snyder passed to Veldkamp who set Ma. Pap for another kill. With the Falcons holding a 23-20 advantage, the Eagles vainly tried to go ahead; Vander Maten passed to Veldkamp who set Ma. Pap for a kill, but it was not enough as 2 SWC hitting errors doomed the Eagles who lost 25-22.

Game 2 clearly showed that “old Mo” was on the Falcons side as they won 25-14. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead but could not continue. Mo, Pap had a pair of kills early on, and Fey had a kill off an overpass, but soon the Eagles trailed 17-9. Kills by Mo. Pap and Paris Van Dyke made the score 18-11. Fey had the final kill in game 2 as the Eagles went down to defeat.
