Helping Students Find Spark

By Jill Fennema –

Hiedi Lambrecht is the new band teacher at Edgerton Public School. This is her first year teaching. She completed her student-teaching at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton this past spring. That school is located in Janesville, which is about 20 miles east of Mankato. She graduated from Minnesota State University in Mankato in May 2021. She lives in Tyler and commutes to school.

Hiedi’s primary instruments are the flute and the piano. She has been playing the flute since the fourth grade and piano for a little bit longer than that. Of course, she teaches all the instruments and enjoys playing them all as well. “Each instrument is unique and has it’s \own fun,” she said.

Hiedi’s parents live in Farmington, where her dad works for a company that builds and develops medical office buildings. Her mom is an executive assistant for a construction company. Hiedi has one sister who is currently attending the University of Kansas.

Hiedi said she decided to become a teacher because she wants to give back and help students find their passions while making music with each other.

“The thing I like most about teaching is the students,” she said. She sees music as having the ability to create a special connection within students. “I love interacting with them. I love learn-

learning from them. I love helping them understand the musical language. I especially love when they have started to find their spark.”

Hiedi said that she thinks of performing in an ensemble like a team sport, where everyone is a varsity player and every instrument/sound is important.

“Music has helped me get through some tough times, including the on-going pandemic,” she added. “There is something magical about performing in a full ensemble that was missed during a large portion of the pandemic.”

When she is not teaching, her favorite thing to do is hangout with her mini lop rabbit, Amelia. A mini lop is a smaller breed of rabbit. She also enjoys rollerblading and being active in nature. Of course, she also likes to listen to a variety of musical genres – from pop to classic rock and Disney broadway shows.
