Drooger Hired at SWC
By Jill Fennema –
One of the four new teachers at Southwest MN Christian Schools is a familiar face and name around Edgerton. Luke Drooger has been hired as the new math teacher. He will be teaching all of the middle school math and some math in the high school.
This is Luke’s second teaching position. He graduated from Dordt University in 2020 and went on to teach middle school math and science at Brewster Pubic School last year.
In addition to his teaching duties, Luke will be the new girls varsity basketball coach at SWC. Drooger’s coaching experience includes working with the 7-12th grade baseball team at Western Christian in Hull, Iowa, for the last three years.
Luke grew up in Edgerton. His parents are Mike and Gay Lynn Drooger. Luke is married to Breanna Nelson. She works at All About Smiles, a dental clinic in Pipestone. They are expecting their first child at the end of December. The couple is glad to be back in Edgerton and seeing familiar faces again.
Luke said that he knew he wanted to be a teacher when he was in high school. He started coaching sports when he was about 16 years old. He was a familiar face at summer rec in Edgerton.
“It was so fun to see the excitement on a kid’s face when they did something they probably thought they’d never be able to do,” Luke said.
His favorite part of being a teacher are the relationships he gets to develop with his students. “Let’s be honest, a lot of the math I teach will be forgotten in a year,” Luke said. “but the relationships are something we will hold onto forever.”
In his free time, Luke enjoys golfing, spending time with family, and watching all Minnesota professional and collegiate sports.
