Should The County Auditor/Treasurer Be Appointed?

Earlier this month, Pipestone County Auditor/Treasurer Tyler Reisch resigned his position effective at the end of August.

This position is currently an elected position. The Pipestone County Board of Commissioners would like to consider appointing this position because the position is a technical position and not a political position.

“The job itself is very detailed and intense,” Commissioner Dan Wildermuth said. “It’s not fair for a person who has dedicated their life and their career to be on the whims of a vote every four years.”

It was pointed out that as an elected official, the auditor/treasurer does not answer to the county board or the administrator. If this position becomes appointed, that person would be answerable to the county administrator.

The legal process for doing that requires that a public hearing be held, to gain public input. That hearing will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 10:00 a.m.

An interim auditor/treasurer was not chosen, but the board did discuss appointing County Administrator Steve Ewing.

Reisch has been with the county since 2013 and has been elected twice. In 2019, Steve Weets retired as the county treasurer and the auditor/treasurer office was combined.
