Students, Volunteers Make Progress On Greenhouse

The greenhouse at Edgerton Public School is starting to really take shape. The head house, or classroom space for the greenhouse is built and the framework for the greenhouse is up. Nathan Thompson, the ag instructor at EHS, and his students have been working with other local builders for the past two months to get the building up.
Hulstein Excavating, Inc. leveled the building site, brought in rock, and poured the concrete for the project. They also helped set the eight vertical posts for the greenhouse frame. There were three different businesses that donated money to pay for the concrete.
In early April, Thompson’s ag structures class started by building the walls and rafters for the head house. They were able to put the things they learned in class into practice as they worked. They also had guidance and assistance from Greg Arp and Ross Kreun, two builders who also serve on the school board. These two contractors also had the equipment – like a telehandler and scaffolding – to make the job possible and safer.
The metal siding was put on the head house and some electrical work has already been done, as well – including getting power to the building. Edgerton Electric did the electric work, but students were able to help and learn while they did this.
Volunteers from C&B operations came out and helped assemble the frame for the greenhouse. Norm Fey provided the students with two rolling scaffolds to aid in the work.
The ag structures class has continued to work on the project, learning as they go. Volunteers will be needed to help the summer ag students and Mr. Thompson to finish constructing the rest of the structure. If you are willing to help, call Thompson at the school or email him and he will put you on the contact list to provide dates and times throughout the summer.
In August, Thompson plans to have an open house for the building, probably in coordination with the school’s annual open house. If you or your business want to donate to the project, you can contact Thompson at the school.
