EHS girls deal with Arkell

On January 25 the Flying Dutchmen gals thought they had a win wrapped up in Lamberton vs. the Red Rock Central Falcons, but RRC fought back to win 59-54. The Dutchmen looked forward to March 11 and the rematch at Edgerton.

It was senior night for the Dutchmen as they honored Addison Fleischman, Teagan Leusink-Paulson, and Brinna Bloemendaal before the game. Then it was time to play ball.

The Falcons, who entered the game with a record of 11-5 and the third seed in upcoming tournament action, showcased their 6’3” center Karli Arkell, who during the volleyball season had tormented the Dutchmen at the net. On the basketball court, she also tormented Edgerton near the net getting 28 of her 33 points in the paint, as RRC cruised to a 60-35 victory. Arkell finished the game 15-for-20 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw line to go along with 13 rebounds (seven offensive) and four blocked shots.

Edgerton trailed 2-0 when Haley Wieck assisted Reece Wassink for a 2-2 tie. After a Falcon free throw, Alyda Vande Griend (four steals) blocked an RRC shot, got the rebound, and converted a layup for a 4-3 advantage. On RRC’s next possession Savannah Schultz (three assists) got a steal that she turned into a layup and Edgerton was in great shape at 6-3.
