Eagles Throttle Dragons

By Skip Hunter –

The final game last week for the SWC girls’ basketball team was against the Adrian-Ellsworth Dragons. The Dragons sported a 5-3 record, good for fifth in the conference. However, the Dragons had given up more points than they had scored, which did not bode well for them against SWC. They only managed 23 points against 71 for the Eagles as the Eagles continued in first place in the conference with a 9-1 record.

After A/E scored first, Cybil Vander Top splashed home a trey assisted by Ella Veldkamp. Maren Nerem scored next for the home team. Veldkamp added to the Eagles’ total with a bucket after a steal. It was the first of 6 thefts for the night. After a Dragon hoop, the Eagles scored the next 7 points. Vander Top hit a trey, assisted by Nerem, and then the senior guard passed out assists to Nerem and Rylie Fey to make the score 14-4.

The visitors picked up 2 buckets before the Eagles scored 7 more points. Fey drained a triple using a Veldkamp assists; the junior then banked in a deuce. Nerem finished the mini-run with a bucket. The Dragons hit a deuce sandwiched between treys by Morgan Pap and Fey. Hannah Pap and Makenzie Snyder provided the passes that led to the buckets. Fey then hit a 3-ball assisted by Vander Top, and then she hit a deuce after grabbing her own missed shot.
