SWC Eagles Soar Over RRC Falcons

By Skip Hunter –

There were rumors that there might be a good game at the SWC gym last Tuesday night. After all both girls’ teams, the SWC Eagles and the RRC Falcons, were tied for second in the Red Rock Conference with identical 5-1 records. The Eagles won the first meeting between the two teams, but RRC had not lost since. Don’t believe rumors. The Eagles went out and took care of business against the Falcons and took over sole possession of second place in the conference with a 76-38 victory.

A duet of Kassie Haak and Kylee Brands provided the national anthem and we were off and running. The Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. Ella Veldkamp grabbed the opening tip and passed to Morgan Pap for the first basket. Maren Nerem did what she does best, grabbed an offensive rebound and scored. Cybil Vander Top was fouled while shooting and made both charity tosses. Hannah Pap drove the lane and scored. She scored the next basket as well using a pass from Ella Veldkamp.

After RRC made their initial bucket, Nerem scored using a pass from Rylie Fey to make the score 12-2.

The Falcons scored once more, but immediately the Eagles moved down the court and Vander Top found M. Pap beyond the arc and the junior splashed home the trey. Makenzie Snyder swiped the ball, passed to Vander Top who racked up another assist with a pass to H. Pap. RRC tried to stay in the game with a deuce and a free throw, but Snyder passed to M. Pap for a bucket to make the score 19-7. RRC scored again but SWC came back with a Veldkamp score. Fey scored a putback shot to make the score 23-9 halfway through the first period.

After a RRC free throw to make the score 23-10, they scored again with a trey. Fey scored followed by a basket by Veldkamp assisted by M. Pap. Fey made the score 29-13 with a bucket. H. Pap drained a trey assisted by Fey to give the Eagles a 17 point lead. RRC went on a little mini-run of 6 points prompting a SWC timeout, called by Coach Denise Nerem. Veldkamp drove down the lane to score, but RRC came back with a trey to cut the lead to 10. Nerem fed M. Pap for a bucket. After RRC scored 3 more points, Snyder scored with 1 tick left on the clock before half to make the score 38-27.
