EHS Girls Gain Revenge

By Mike Drooger –

There’s an old proverb that goes like this: “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” It ex-presses the notion that vengeance is more satisfying when enacted some time after the harm that instigated it. On January 16, 2021, the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen ladies lost to the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers 42-39. A big reason Edgerton failed to win was less than spectacular free throw shooting (11-for-33).

On Friday night, February 12, the Dutchmen enacted revenge and, if the dish wasn’t cold, the temperature certainly was. It was minus seven degrees at the conclusion of the game with a feels-like temp of minus 17 due to a light breeze. When all was said and done, Coach Andrew Fleischman and his gals were able to savor a sweet 63-51 victory to bring their record to 4-5.

KDWC radio’s Ross Kreun named Reece Wassink the De Boer Chevrolet Player of the Game. Wassink owned the first half, pouring in 16 points. But, as is usually the case in a team sport such as basketball, she didn’t do it alone. Great ball movement by the Dutchmen got Wassink the ball in scoring position. And Wassink did a great job getting into that scoring position. “Our posts have to grind it out down low and then give the wing players a good target,” Coach Fleisch-man explained during his postgame radio interview.

At halftime the Dutchmen had 18 field goals and 40 points. They also had 14 assists at the break, further evidence of the good ball movement. Savannah Schultz had 7 passes for baskets during the game’s first 18 minutes and three of them were exact duplicates.
