Coyotes Rain 3s On Dutchmen

By Mike Drooger –

Tom Cotter—a 1984 Brewster High School graduate and current owner of TC’s Tavern in Brewster—was the final Bulldog to surpass the 1,000-point plateau before Brewster joined with Sioux Valley and Round Lake. He was at the Edgerton gym on Thursday night, February 11, when his son’s Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes took on the Flying Dutchmen. Cotter gave his personal scouting report on the Coyotes, stating simply, “We shoot a lot of threes.”

Cotter was spot on with his pregame pronouncement thanks to the Coyotes attempting 37 shots from beyond the three-point arc en route to a 70-49 win over Edgerton. HL-O/F made 16 of their trey attempts for 48 points, which was 69 percent of their total. They made just nine out of 24 attempts from the two-point area on the court.

The Coyotes are arguably one of the Red Rock Conference’s most athletic teams, and it begins with Eli Fest, a 6’3” senior who entered the 2021 season with over 1,200 career points. The Dutchmen basketball players that also played football, likely remember Fest who they chased around the football field the previous three seasons.

HL-O/F Head Coach Colby Pack welcomed two other superstars into his band of Coyotes. Brothers Carter and Sawyer Drent attended Heron Lake-Okabena School before transferring to Akron-Westfield High School in Iowa three year ago where their father Jeff was the industrial arts instructor. But now they are back in SW Minnesota and giving the Coyotes a very impressive three-headed attack.

Sawyer Drent drilled seven treys on his way to 25 points, brother Carter added four long-distance shots and 16 points, and Fest nailed a pair of triples and finished with 13 points.
