Third grade news
The third graders studied the life of Joseph. We did research on Egyptian gods, family life, jewelry, and brick making. We read our reports to our classmates and showed them pictures to go with our reports.
We are also busy memorizing our multiplication tables. When we pass we get to put a sticker on our chart. We are doing great!
Hello from 4th grade!
In the past couple months the 4th graders from SWC have been busy learning about the Solar System. They learned about stars, constellations, galaxies, the planets, and other objects in space. They read passages about each individual planet and learned what color the planet is, how far it is from the sun, the size of the planet compared to Earth, how long it takes for the planet to complete one rotation for its day and one revolution for its year, if it was an outer or inner planet, and how many moons the planet has. To wrap up the unit, each 4th grader created a model of the Solar System either on their own or with a partner. For the project, they were required to put the planets in order, make them the correct color, and make them the correct size in comparison to other planets. They also had to include one of the following: moons, the asteroid belt, or a dwarf planet. If they included all three, then they received extra credit. They all did a wonderful job and had a lot of fun getting to be creative with their project!
Fifth grade news
The 5th graders had an opportunity to learn about the body systems in January and the importance of maintaining a good diet. Ann Marie Busker, a local dietician, came to talk with our class at the end of our unit. She told us about micro and macro nutrients and what foods contain which nutrients. She explained the importance of a well-balanced diet and ‘eating the rainbow.’ Which does not mean to eat lots of skittles, but rather to eat all colors of fruits and vegetables as each contains different nutrients our body needs. The kids had fun trying to come up with a fruit and vegetable of each color including white!
In the 5th grade art class, we learned about micrography! Micrography literally means ‘small writing.’ The kids traced an 8×10 picture of themselves, including the most important details. Then they took a fine tip sharpie and wrote things about themselves including likes and characteristics. It is fun to see the finished product and have people try to guess who each student is!”
