Edgerton Car Wash Is Closed

Jeremy and Jessica Voss have sold Voss Auto Wash. They sent out a letter to their customers regarding this fact a few weeks ago. The identity of the buyer has not been made public at this time, but there will not be a car wash in Edgerton going forward.

The Voss’ bought the car wash in 2009 from Del Hulstein, who had owned it for about five and a half years. Hulstein had purchased the business from Jon Walhof, who had built the automatic portion of the car wash in 2004.

The car wash at this location – at the corner of county roads 9 and 17, was originally built by Doug Jasper in 1984. At that time, there was no other car wash in Edgerton and folks were really excited to have one. There was one wash bay inside the building and another outside on a concrete pad. The outside wash area was to accommodate taller vehicles.

Prior to this, there was a car wash located just off Main Street, where J&J Autoworks is located. That car wash was owned by Orv Corbin. By the time that Jasper built his car wash, that one was closed.

Jasper sold the business to Doug Tinklenberg in 1988. When Doug moved to Sioux Falls, he sold it to his parents, Le and Elaine Tinklenberg.

After a string of robberies, the Tinklenbergs shut down the car wash. It opened again when Jon and his father, Peter A. Walhof, bought the car wash together and fixed it up with the help of Jon’s father-in-law, Rolly Van Nieuwenhuyzen, who was a carpenter. They remodeled and added the second bay and the automatic washing equipment where the outside wash area had been.

It remains to be seen what will be going into the two-stall bay of the former car wash. Many residents hope that a new wash will open in town, perhaps one with a bay large enough for bigger vehicles like construction trucks and the like. For now, people will need to go out of town for an automatic car wash.
