EHS Boys Battle To The End
By Mike Drooger –
Fresh off a big win 58-37 win over Adrian/Ellsworth on January 19, the Flying Dutchmen took to the floor in Edgerton hosting the Rebels of Murray County Central in Red Rock Conference basketball action. The Dutchmen battled from opening tipoff to final buzzer, but too many turnovers (26) and 16-for-45 field goal shooting did them in, in a 54-44 loss.
If you attended the game, or watched on your computer via KJOE radio’s live feed, and you didn’t see the scoreboard, by halftime you’d likely think the Dutchmen didn’t stand a chance to pull out a victory. They had 15 turnovers and had connected on just eight out of 19 field goal attempts. Even though the Rebels had turned the ball over just six times, their field goal shooting was chillier than Edgerton’s (9-for-29), and that meant the Dutchmen were right in the game, trailing by seven at 27-20.
Keegan Fey had the hot hand in the first half pouring in 11 of his team’s 20 points. Fey drained a trio of long shots and added a two-pointer to keep his team within firing distance at the break.
Jacob Fischer yanked down an offensive rebound and was fouled on a shot attempt to open the second half. He made one free throw and then Mason Gilberts on scored down low (assist Nolan Buckridge) to make it 27-23.
It didn’t take long and Edgerton faced serious foul trouble. Gilbertson was called for his fourth with 12:54 left in the game and Fischer got his fourth at 10:51. But post replacement Jacob Ockenga contributed a two-pointer and Gabe Gilbertson added two hoops to pull EHS to within 31-29 with 10:12 left in the game. The Rebels responded. They got a pair of two-pointers and a trey to go up by nine, 38-29. Now it was time for the Dutchmen to respond.
