Eagles vanquish Wolverines
Skip Hunter
A quick turnaround found the SWC girls’ basketball team facing the Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey Wolverines Monday night just 48 hours after its win against RRC. Every time you play a team at the beginning of the year it brings a time of uncertainty. While past history might indicate an easy win, who knows? Past history was right as the Eagles almost tripled MLA/C’s score with a 73-25 victory.
Mountain Lake scored first and held the lead for a couple of minutes before Maren Nerem put a missed shot back in. The visitors scored again but that was quickly answered by a Rylie Fey bucket assisted by Nerem. The Eagles grabbed the lead that they held throughout the rest of the game with a bucket by Ella Veldkamp. Hannah Pap later stole the ball and scored. Makenna Moss was fouled while shooting and made both free throws to give the Eagles a 10-4 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the first half.
The Eagles continued their 11-0 run with a Veldkamp bucket after swiping the ball. Later Morgan Pap was fouled while shooting and made 1 of 2 free throws. Nerem pilfered the pill and scored to finish the run, giving the Eagles a 15-4 lead with 10:48 showing on the clock. After MLA stopped the run with a bucket, Cybil Vander Top rained in a trey, assisted by Nerem. The visitors scored again, but SWC answered with a Fey basket, assisted by M. Pap. This was the beginning of a 17-0 run.
Baskets by Veldkamp (2), Fey, H. Pap, Vander Top, Nerem, and M. Pap as well as a Makenna Moss charity shot made the score 37-8. MLA hit a trey, but that was promptly matched by 1 by Fey using a Tyra Snyder pass. Nerem was 1 for 2 from the line, and Fey 2 for 2 to make the score 43-11. The Eagles finished the first half with 2 buckets by Makenna Moss; the latter one assisted by H. Pap. When the teams left the floor, the Eagles led 47-11.
