Eagles Ground Chargers

By Skip Hunter –

After the tough loss to Hills-Beaver Creek the SWC girls’ basketball team was looking to bounce back against the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers. An infusion of players onto the Charger roster looked like it might give the team added spark. The Eagles quickly ran down the visitors and came away with a 73-31 win.

Madelyn Rozeboom used her dulcet tones to honor the USA with the national anthem, and the Eagles were soon showing basketball harmony. However, WWG jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Morgan Pap made a nice drive and dished the ball off to Maren Nerem for 2 points. Later Brooklynn Moss was fouled and made both free throws. The Eagles took the lead for good with an Ella Veldkamp trey assisted by Moss.

Rylie Fey put back her own missed shot, and then made a baseline drive to increase the score to 11-6. Cybil Vander Top swiped the ball and scored, before WWG ended a 7-minute scoring drought with a hoop. The Eagles quickly retaliated with 7 points. Pap fed Nerem who was fouled while shooting. She made both free throws. Pap scored, and then Veldkamp picked a Charger’s pocket and scored. Makenzie Snyder made the last point of the run from the charity stripe.

After two WWG buckets, Nerem picked up a loose ball and scored. The visitors scored twice more, sandwiched around a Pap free throw. Nerem rebounded her own miss and scored, and Veldkamp also had a put-back bucket. WWG scored again, but the Eagles ended the first half on a 11-0 run. First a Moss bucket assisted by Vander Top. Then Snyder scored after a steal. Moss passed to Vander Top for 2 more points followed by another Vander Top score after a steal. Pap ended the first half scoring with a trey, abetted by Fey. The score was 38-18 at the break.
