Eagles Defeat Dutchmen

By Skip Hunter –

Friday night was the first of the annual cross-town basketball rivalries between SWC and EHS. Both teams want to win; both teams know each other well personally; but only one team can win. The Eagles had to face a more physical type of game than they are used to, but they prevailed 83-36.

For the second time this week Madelyn Rozeboom favored us with an excellent rendition of the national anthem before the varsity game. Then the boys were off and running. Jacob Fischer scored first for the Dutchmen. Dawson Rieck hit the first of 4 treys he would net using a pass from Cole Walhof. EHS came back with a basket when Gabe Gilbertson looped a pass in to Mason Gilbertson as EHS retook the lead 4-3. Micah Scaap abetted Van Hulzen as the junior splashed home a trey. Walhof drove the lane to increase the Eagles’ lead to 8-4. Schaap was fouled while shooting and made both. Keegan Fey put the ball where Jacob Ockenga could convert it into 2 points. Jacob Raak answered with a bucket aided by a Rieck pass to make the score 12-6 and precipitate a Dutchmen time out called by Coach Doug Van Kley.

Rieck dropped in a triple. After several fouls Walhof swiped the ball and scored. G. Gilbertson went 1 for 2 from the foul line, but Walhof came back with another bucket. On an inbounds play Vander Haar made the score 21-9 using a Schaap feed. The Eagles continued the run with 2 treys by Raak; the first was assisted by Zach Prins and the second by Van Hulzen. Later it was Rieck’s turn to bomb one in from long range using a Prins pass. Fey answered with his own trey, but Rieck hit another again using a feed from Prins. Raak hit his third trey, this time using a pass from Vander Haar. Fey scored a deuce, but the Eagles came back with an Owen Vogel bucket using a pass from Levi Van Dyken and 4 made free throws by Schaap.

Nolan Buckridge was fouled while shooting and made both charity tosses to make the score 42-16 with 4:38 left in the first half. Schaap made another free throw and then assisted Walhof for a bucket. Prins showed his range with a trey, assisted by Van Hulzen. EHS came back with 2 treys. The first was by Brady Rolla, aided by M. Gilbertson. G. Gilbertson hit the second, abetted by Ockenga. Rieck scored the last point of the half from the free throw line, and the teams went to the locker rooms with the Eagles leading 49-24.
