Dutchmen Tally A Win
By Mike Drooger –
Welcome to the NBA grind, Edgerton Flying Dutchmen. EHS played Saturday night, Sunday was a day of rest, and then they took to the court on Monday and Tuesday nights in Red Rock Conference basketball action.
They’d likely play every day if the game turned out like the one of Tuesday night, January 19, at Edgerton when the Adrian/Ellsworth Dragons supplied the opposition. The Dutchmen had held the lead at the onset of the season’s first two games, and they did the same against A/E. But this time they held that lead all the way to the end, coasting to a super satisfying 58-37 victory to improve to 1-2.
Gabe Gilbertson got the scoring underway when he collected a steal and raced to his bucket laying the ball off the glass for two. Then it was Nolan Buckridge time. The leftie nailed back-to-back treys (both assists from Keegan Fey) and Edgerton led quickly 8-0. Mason Gilbertson hit two free throws before Gabe drained a trey (assist Fey) and Edgerton enjoyed a 13-2 lead.
The momentum that had been on Edgerton’s side slowly moved to the Dragons who cut the lead to 18-14, but Jacob Fischer cashed in from deep (assist Gabe) to restore order and give his team a 21-14 lead. Buckridge hit his 4th trey of the first half to move Edgerton up by 10 and they enjoyed a 26-20 lead at the break.
When play resumed in the second half, it took 15 seconds for something bad to happen when Mason picked up his third foul. But the big fella played on and even got a bucket (assist Fischer). Mason’s bucket began an incredible run of 14-2 that brought the score to 42-24 and Edgerton was in total control.
