Dutchmen Girls Win Another

Mike Drooger

Strike up the band!  The Flying Dutchmen girls won again!  Andrew Fleischman’s girls beat Adrian/Ellsworth, and then they had one get away vs. Red Rock Central.  On Thursday night, January 28, they got back in the win column with a hard-fought 37-28 win over the Wolverines of Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey, increasing their record to 2-3.

Alyda Vande Griend got the ball rolling at the 17:21 mark when she got the first of her four steals and converted a layup.  Reece Wassink got the next four points thanks to a Savannah Schultz assist and a Wassink putback bucket.  The Dutchmen led 6-0. The lead eventually grew to 12-3 after Haley Wieck scored in the paint, and the Dutchmen stretched the lead to 20-8 at halftime. Edgerton’s final eight points of the first half came on another Wassink putback, a bank off the glass from Miriam Ockenga (assist Mateya Gilbertson), yet another Wassink bucket after she pulled down an offensive rebound, and a Wieck bucket with 28 seconds left (Schultz assist).

Edgerton and MLA/C traded turnovers to begin the second half, but Edgerton scored on its second possession. Addison Fleischman found Wassink on the block for the assist and about three minutes later, Wassink hit a charity toss for a 23-11 Edgerton lead.

Brinna Bloemendaal suited up for the first time this season after dealing with concussion aftereffects. But the senior was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed from the elbow at the 8:21 mark when she swished a shot for a 25-13 EHS lead. It became 27-13 after two free throws from Vande Griend.  And then things got a little hectic for Edgerton’s girls.
