EHS Girls Narrowly Miss Victory

By Nancy Wassink –

The Edgerton Dutchmen girls took to the court to start out the 2021 basketball season against the host Westbrook- Walnut Grove Chargers on Saturday, January 16.  Despite the solid effort on defense, missed opportunities on offense and 22 unclaimed free throws handed Edgerton a three point loss to WWG by a score of 39-42.

Starters Addison Fleisch-man, Brinna Bloemendaal, Reece Wassink, Alyda Vande Griend, and Savannah Schultz took their places on the court and the game began. The tipoff was secured by Wassink and Schultz put the first points of the game on the board for Edgerton to get the season underway.

Physical play and strong defense forced turnovers early as both teams worked the rust out.  Edgerton picked up a free throw from Alyda Vande Griend, and a couple free throws and successful post moves from Reece Wassink snagged the lead at 10-7 early in the contest. Eight unanswered points from WWG pushed them past the Dutchmen, and four minutes into the game Edgerton was trailing 14-20. EHS was in the bonus early, attacking on offense and forcing fouls, but had trouble converting the free throws hitting only 7 of 13 in the first half. A scoring surge in the final two minutes of the half pulled Edgerton to within 7, heading to the locker room down 19-26.
