Falcons Soar Over Eagles
By Skip Hunter –
All of a sudden the SWC Eagle volleyball calendar got full. Due to the governor’s mandate pausing youth sports for four weeks – we can only hope, – the Eagles played 4 games in 4 days. On Tuesday the Red Rock Central Falcons came to town. On Wednesday the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes showed up at the SWC gym for a 3:45 P.M. game. The two in-town schools took on each other at the Edgerton High School gym on Thursday, and then to cap off the week the Patriots from Hills-Beaver Creek came to SWC. The Eagles ended up with a 2-2 record, losing the first 2 matches and winning the final 2 tilts of the season.
Because of the uncertainty of what would happen, SWC put together parents/senior night for before the game. Seniors Cybil Vander Top, Makenzie Snyder, Brooklynn Moss, Madelyn Rozeboom, and Maren Nerem were celebrated for their work in the volleyball program over the last four years. After the short celebration, Maddie Rozeboom favored us with a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. The Eagles, who had lost to RRC earlier in the year, hoped to gain a measure of revenge. They stayed close to the Falcons, but could not pull out a win in game 1, losing 25-19. After RRC jumped out to a 3-1 advantage, senior Cybil Vander Top cranked up an ace serve. Then senior setter Makenzie Snyder passed to Morgan Pap who set Rylie Fey for a kill to tie the score. Falcons soar over Eagles Fey then blocked an RRC kill attempt to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. After RRC regained control of the serve, the Eagles faltered, committing 5 errors as the visitors took an 11-6 lead.
